What Are Dental Crowns?

If you have a tooth that has been damaged or decayed beyond repair, whether due to age, disease, accidents, or normal wear, dental crowns are one way to restore your smile. A dental crown is a cap that is put over the damaged tooth. It’s shaped like a healthy tooth and is custom-fitted to your mouth for a virtually undetectable appearance.

Our dental crowns from our Alpharetta, GA office can be made entirely of porcelain or porcelain bonded to a gold base, depending on the strength needed and the level of damage to the tooth. Most dental crowns last for twenty to thirty years, making them one of the longest-lasting dental procedures on the market. A dental crown can be easily replaced if it becomes damaged.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

  • Natural, virtually undetectable appearance
  • Able to be placed on misshapen or heavily damaged teeth
  • An option when veneers aren’t
  • Relieves pain due to hairline fractures
  • Allows for normal eating and drinking
  • Prevents breakage of root canals

Dental Crown Procedure

The dental crown application process occurs over the course of two visits. During your first visit to our Alpharetta office, the tooth will be completely cleaned and any decay removed. The tooth will then be shaped in order to best fit the crown. An impression will be taken so that a custom crown can be created, and you will be fixed with a temporary crown until your next visit.

During your next appointment, the temporary dental crown will be replaced with the final, permanent restoration. We will cement the new crown into place, and after the anesthesia has worn off, you can resume normal eating and drinking.
